Why You Don’t Feel Like Yourself (The Total Load Theory)

At some point, most people notice a shift they can’t fully explain.

They’re still functioning. Still showing up to work, handling responsibilities, getting through the day. But something feels off. Energy isn’t as steady. Focus takes more effort. Patience runs thinner. Sleep doesn’t fully restore them….So they start looking for the cause.

Maybe it’s diet, so they try to clean it up. Maybe they’re noticing they feel overwhelmed, so they try to manage their schedule better. Maybe it’s a deficiency, so they add in some supplements. And while some of these changes help, they rarely solve the problem entirely.

Because the issue usually isn’t one thing.

It’s everything adding up.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), founded in 1965, is generally recognized as the first to apply the “total load” to explain the multi-factorial, complicated root causes of chronic health conditions. According to the AAEM website,

“The “total load” concept postulates that multiple and chronic environmental exposures in a susceptible individual contribute to a breakdown of that person’s homeostatic mechanisms. Rarely is there only one offending agent responsible for causing a diseased condition. Multiple factors co-exist, usually over a prolonged period of time in bringing about the disease process.”

The body works the same way.

Your energy, clarity, mood, and ability to perform are all influenced by the total load your body is carrying. That includes things like blood sugar instability, chronic stress, poor sleep, nutrient depletion, environmental exposures, inflammation, and the constant pace of modern life. Individually, each may seem manageable. Together, they create a level of demand your body has to continuously adapt to.

And for a while, it does.

But over time, that adaptation becomes less efficient. And instead of a clear “breakdown,” what most people experience is a gradual decline in how consistently they feel and perform. Energy becomes uneven. Focus isn’t as sharp. Recovery takes longer. Things that used to feel easy require way more effort.

This is especially common in high-performing individuals. The capability doesn’t disappear, but the consistency does. Some days feel clear and productive, others feel slower and more strained, and the gap between the two starts to widen.

What’s often misunderstood is that this isn’t a motivation issue. It’s a physiological one.

When total load is high, the body prioritizes survival and regulation over optimization. Resources are diverted toward managing stress and maintaining balance, which means less capacity for sharp thinking, sustained energy, and recovery.

The instinct is usually to push harder or add more…more structure, more supplements, more strategies. But adding on top of an already overloaded system often makes things worse.

The real shift comes from changing the load itself.

That means not only reducing obvious stressors, but also rebuilding the systems that support the body: stable nutrition, quality sleep, proper hydration and minerals, nervous system regulation, movement, and recovery. These are the foundations that allow the body to handle demand without breaking down.

When those pieces are in place, the change is noticeable. Energy stabilizes. Focus returns. Decisions feel easier. Performance becomes more consistent, without the same level of effort.

This is why there’s rarely a single fix. Two people can feel the same symptoms but be carrying very different loads, which means the path forward won’t look exactly the same.

A better question than “What’s wrong with me?” is:

“What is my body carrying right now?”

Because the body isn’t working against you. It’s responding to the total load it’s under.

And when that load shifts, so does everything else.
